Q: When will I be able to submit a paper and/or register for the conference?
A: Registration and submission will be open by late-February.
Q: Do I need to pay a registration fee prior to submitting the abstract?
A: Yes, and the annual registration fee is due April 1st for presenters.
Q: When will I find out if my proposal has been accepted or not?
A: We expect to notify presenters by the end of May to early June of the committee's decision.
Q: Do I need to pay a registration fee in case I am selected as a presenter and what happens if my paper is not selected?
A: Yes, you must pay the registration fee in order for your
paper to be reviewed. You must notify the conference staff by email to receive a full refund if your paper is not selected.
Q: What is the approximate length of the abstract (word
limit)?
A: Approximately 400 words.
Q: How much time is allotted to a panel?
A: All sessions are 1 hour and 45 minutes in length (105 minutes). It is up to the organizer/chair as to how to allocate the time among the presenters. Keep in mind that you may want to also allow for questions at the end of the session.
Q: Can a chair also present a paper?
A: Yes, of course.
Q: Do the conference organizers provide funding for travel costs, lodging, etc?
A: Unfortunately, we are unable to provide funding for presenters and
attendees.
Q: Where can I stay in Madison?
A: Please visit the lodging
page for a list of hotels that
are reserved for conference attendees.
Q: How can I find someone to room with during my stay in Madison?
A: Please visit the roommate
board to find others looking
for a roommate.
Q: Is the cost of a conference program book included in
my registration fee?
A: Yes.
Q: Are meals provided at the conference?
A: You may purchase meal tickets
online along with your registration in advance for the
All-Conference Dinner.
Q: Is there a "call for papers" site which lists proposed panels?
A: Yes. The conference is maintaining a panel
board for people who wish to connect with other scholars and form panels.
If you are looking for a people to collaborate on a panel for the 40th Annual
Conference on South Asia, please send an email to conference@southasia.wisc.edu with
your contact information and a few sentences about your proposed panel. We
will post your information on the panel board during regular business hours.
Q: Is it possible to submit a panel proposal with 5 presenters?
A: We advise against this, but if there is a reason for this
configuration it will be left up to the organizer to deal with it in terms
of timing for each presenter and allowing time for some discussion of the papers
with the audience. The panels which have five presenters are often ad hoc panels.
It is sometimes hard to group all of the single papers into cohesive panels
and we are left with more presenters than time slots.
Q: Do you accept film submissions for the annual conference?
A: Yes, we often have films screenings during the conference.
We also have film makers present single papers and show clips of their films.
If you are thinking of just a screening, please mail or drop off a screener
of your film to the Conference Staff for the committee to review before April
1st if possible. If selected, your film will be scheduled into the conference.
Q: How can I be considered for a conference performance?
A: Conference performances are arranged well in advance.
Please contact us in January to be considered for a performance at the
conference.
Q: Is there a theme for the conference?
A: For 2012, the conference encourages panels and papers that address questions of corruption and its cultural manifestations and understandings from a variety of disciplinary and evidentiary perspectives. Of course, this theme does not exclude panels and papers on other topics.
Q: What are the paper topics for the conference?
A: Individuals can present their work in three manners: a
single paper, as part of an organized panel or roundtable. The conference staff
does not organize panels or roundtables, therefore we cannot articulate topics.
Q:Can our panel be split into two separate presentations?
A: Yes, this is possible at the conference. In your submission
please note in the first panel title - Part I and then in the second panel
submission note the title - Part II. Also in each abstract make mention of
the fact that this is a back-to-back session.
Q: Is it possible to co-author a single paper?
A: Yes, please follow the directions on the single paper
submission form.
If you have any other questions, please email us.
